Greater Rheas, standing at 1.4m (4ft 8in) tall, are one of the largest birds in the world and are found exclusively on the open plains of South America. Although they are flightless, their wings are not completely functionless and are used to aid manoeuvarbility while the bird is running in excess of 60kph (40mph).
